Vellum Pieces
The Midnight Tempest
Piece Description
In this piece, I wanted to expose the dilemma of society’s most consistent behaviors: masking one’s true identity under a fabricated facade. Witnessing my friends getting lost underneath their masks, I understand the struggles they go through to hide their true selves. By creating this visual representation of their behavior and society’s, I hope to bring awareness to create a solution.
Structurally, I overlayed two pieces of vellum photos together with contrasting gestures. The photo of me looking towards the camera is a self-portrait whereas the other is me looking away, hiding. During a sunny day, I hung the overlaid pictures on the glass so natural light can pierce through both of the photos. The light piercing through both photos represents how I am trying to cut through my facade.

Piece Description
In this piece, void is silence, and silence is pain. My closest friend sadly moved away, and I wanted to say goodbye– just one word could’ve encapsulated all the years of laughter and friendship. But when that moment came, he had already left. It was one of the deepest cuts my heart has felt. This piece conveys that very pain: a loss of a friend in a timeless and important moment. To convey the burden of emotions, I overlaid the lyrics from “Attention” - by Joji - behind the model whose gloomy character provokes fading thoughts - memories, senses, and livelihood.
In executing this piece, I requested the model to reflect a façade of sadness over a bedrock of anticipation. I printed this piece on vellum to reflect the ethereal qualities that make memories so precious and tangible. Just as emotions layer on themselves in order to conduct regret, sympathy, and uncertainty, the piece is layered to convey the union of various emotions.
