Piece Description
Through the use of wires and obsidian shards in the piece’s construction, public perception and social facades inspired me to engage in the topic of personality fragmentation. These days, people are experiencing personality fragmentation to an extent due to various reasons. One derives from the world becoming a ‘global village.’ As the world unifies, cultural exposure and perspectives cause complicated identity intersections.
Constructing this piece, I began by framing the wire head. I stuffed crumpled newspaper inside as a physical model. Following, it was an intricate game of Tetris as I pieced the shards together to mimic a face. Each shard represents a facade to show that my identity exists as parts. I lit the sculpture on fire to melt off the facades, but society - symbolized by the wire structure - won’t allow me. The result expressed pain and confusion to show the difficulty in pursuing self-identity.
