Cemented

Piece Description
Through its concept, I wanted to expose a common human behavior of repressing emotions fueled by our existence on social media. Today, people perpetually act happy on the web such as Instagram; as if everything is just a wonderful, sunny day. Cemented mimics the compartmentalizations we create for ourselves on social media, constructing walls and projecting only our best and fabricated qualities.
The piece reflects the fragile nature that our generation has designed for itself. Each open chamber of the cinder blocks imitates an Instagram profile, yet deep inside of the individual’s feelings, it’s crowded with fragile, emotional elements: dragon fruit, broken mirrors, saran wrapped water, spider webs, and candle wax. Although we may believe that these networks essentially dictate our lives, a nudge - since none of the materials inside the cells strongly adhere to the surface - is all it takes for our identities to quickly crumble and fall.
