Oceanic Confliction
Piece Description
Continuously changing from its innate power, oceans have always fascinated me. As waves crash and destructively folds upon itself, its energy succumbs to the larger mass of sea, to become united. I analyzed how ideas and emotions conflict with each other just how oceanic waves behave during impactful collisions. “Oceanic Confliction” is a visual representation of what happens in the mind when two ideas or emotions fight against each other. Rather than one overthrowing the other - often times - the mind becomes static. We resemble this tendency: when an unstoppable force meets another unstoppable force, we become stagnant.
I focused on the technique of creating texture with acrylic paint. To get those abrasive textures on the canvas, I spread a large amount of paint on a palette paper, creating a soft, malleable piece of acrylic. I then rolled the dried paint into itself to create multiple string-like pieces, which I finally painted onto the surface to mimic the direction of the waves.
