Piece Description

Darkness only makes stars shine brighter. This is a metaphor for the installation, Stunted Growth, which is a holistic showcase of my childhood. To begin, the tree trunk is painted black to showcase my childhood through a darker lens. Adorning the trunk of the tree are individual gemstones that contrast the stark blackness. These gems reflect off the minimal lighting in the gallery, but when the light catches, the stones shine brighter to symbolize my shining moments and memories. Furthermore, my growth has been restricted by my traditional Asian parents, who have a different cultural background, which is depicted through the tangled fishing lines.
Having family difficulties growing up, I’ve felt a lot of pain and suffering, periodically through my innocence. To display that, I splashed red and black paint onto white roses to represent those moments. Although a little morbid, I believe that pain allows for maturity and growth, which I’m grateful to have learned early on.
